A beautiful city glitters during the day, but at night the rats emerge. A powerful man is accused of an abusive relationship with a young boy from a disadvantaged family. Montero is in charge of the judicial investigation of these allegations. Is Pablo Rivas, the accused, guilty? Or is he simply a kindly benefactor whose fatherly interest in the boy has been misinterpreted? Who can Montero trust, as he tries to use his power to rid the city of its rats?
Hamlyn, written by acclaimed Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga and translated by David Johnston, is a mysterious detective story of twisted relationships where nothing is what it seems. It is a gripping modern take based on the tale of the Pied Piper. It questions the ability of systems of law, psychiatry and bureaucracy to effectively help the weak and vulnerable in modern societies.
Space Productions is the in-house theatre company at the Space, formed in 2007 by Adam Hemming (Artistic Director) and Mari Rettedal-Westlake (Creative Producer). Dedicated to staging accessible, ambitious and inventive productions, the company has provided opportunities for numerous performers and theatre artists. Sandra Maturana was appointed the Space’s Theatre Directing Fellow in 2013, and this will be her first piece for Space Productions. Our nineteenth production also marks Hamlyn’s UK premiere.

David Johnston, who provided the English translation of Hamlyn, will join us for a post-show discussion after the performance on Friday 2nd May. A multi-award winning translator for the stage, David has written versions of over thirty plays from Spain, Latin America, Portugal and France for professional performance around the world. He recently received his third commission from the Royal Shakespeare Company to write a translation of Lope de Vega’s El Perro del Hortelano, and has also worked with the Royal Court’s International Department. His prolific work includes radio and TV as well as theatre.
